world of warcraft patch 1.12.1

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

I thought I would write a quick mention that patch 1.12.1 was released today for World of Warcraft. I seem that this was only a patch to fix bugs some of which were getting very annoying. Some of them include making the mini map in AV not disappear when a warning message appeared and when seated in a tower that was in ELP while it is changing ownership you will no longer be forced to stand. At least Blizzard has not taken too long to fix these bugs.

Mozilla Firefox

Monday, September 18th, 2006

The first open source program I thought I would review is Mozilla Firefox. Mozilla Firefox was created to be a standalone web browser as apposed to it’s bigger brother Mozilla which has a web browser, news and email client, WYSIWYG editor, and more all in one interface. I have been using Firefox for the last few years now as my primary web browser and have been very happy with the experience. There are still the odd page that is unviewable in Forfox as they have been developed by web developers who don’t care about sticking to web standards a create paged for the inferior Internet explorer only. I have also found some stability issues when using third party plug ins such as flash occasionally causing the browser to crash.

There are many reasons why I use Firefox over its competition and here they are:

  • I like to support the work the open source software community.

  • It is regularly updated to fix any security issues and program faults where Internet explorer will only have any problems fixed after a problem has been found and heavily exploited. Updates are automatically downloaded when a new version is released and is installed the next time you run Firfox.

  • It has tabbed browsing so you can easily brows pages from multiple websites in one window and not clutter up your status bar.

  • More secure and user friendly to use than Internet Explorer as it blocks unwanted spyware, addwear, viruses, popups, and even advertising.

  • It is a small download taking up less than 5Mb

  • It is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux in 44 languages (some are not available as of yet with the most recent update)

  • It requires very low hardware specifications to run only requiring a 233MHz and 64Mb or RAM.

  • Webpages load faster while accurately displaying the page as is was intended (as long as the page is not using IE only code).

  • It has an integrated search function where you can use Google or many other specialized search engines.

  • There are hundreds of extension plug-ins that you can download to further enhance you browsing experience (I personally use a few different website development ones to he me create better web pages as well and other general ones).

  • It contains a fully functionally RSS feed reader where you can subscribe to a feed from a website and get updates of changes without having to visit the website itself.

  • Firefox is the most W3C compliant browser.

I urge everyone to download a copy of Mozilla Firefox for themselves and try it out. You will get a faster more secure userfriendly experience all for free.

Open Source Software

Friday, September 15th, 2006

As a small business owner I am always looking for a way to keep my cost down, one way I have found is to use open source software (OSS).Open-source software is computer software whose source code is available under a copyright license that permits users to study, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified form (wikipedia 2006). I thought that I would start a new series of reviews of various multimedia and business related programs that I regularly use to show that you don’t always have to pay lots of money for good software. Some of the reviews in this series will include OpenOffice.org, Gizmo project, Mozilla Fire Fox, Mozilla Thunderbird, Gimp and Gimpshop, Ink scape, BOINC with more to be added later.

World of warcraft cross realm battle grounds review

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

After playing in the new cross realm battlegrounds for the last few weeks I thought I would review my experiences. First off I think it is a good idea as queue waiting times have generally been reduced. There are and have bee some exceptions as time to get into Alterac Valley is back to over an hour to get in. Also the first weekend after the patch the amount of Warsong gulches in the 10 – 19 bracket was cut to only 2 battlegrounds this caused waiting times of an hour and a half to get in. The cross realm battlegrounds have both been a positive and a negative to the Alliance.

In the lvl 60’s battlegrounds as far as I know the Alliance have not won a single Warsong gulch as all the of the Hord we have battled are “Premades”. Previous to the patch the alliance were winning about 10% of battles in Warsong gulch on Khaz’goroth over all levels. In the level 10 – 19 Worsong gulch battlegrounds the Alliance has been winning about 70% of battles as in that bracket a majority of the Alliance and hord players are “Twinked” and most of them are regular players and know how play.

In Athari Basin the Alliance have improved their winning percentage for a low ~20% to nearly 50% as a majority of the battles were lost before because there were 7 or less alliance onto 15 hord. This has now been fixed as most battles are at least 14 versus 14.

In Alterac Vally the Alliance has also improved their winning percentage to about 95% over the previous 60% as most Alliance players have played it enough now to know that the only way to win is to race to the general and not “turtle” fighting the hord.

Overall I have found some major problems with the cross realm battlegrounds. There seems to be a big latency disparity between US players and non US players, this seems especially so on the weekends at times that both US players and non US players are on at the same time. I have found that at least from my perspective that most of the Hord players I have come across have been form the US and seem to hit me nearly twice as often as what I can hit them thus causing me to die more that I should. This is caused as I am in Australia and I am a long way from the server as all of the “Oceanic” servers are based in the USA (I believe somewhere in California). Blizzard really needs to move the “Oceanic” servers or created new ones in Australia or at least somewhere closer outside mainland USA. I do however understand that this will unlikely fix the problem as not all of the battleground groupings are even in the “Oceanic” area and so the lag may end up worse. There is also still the standard server lag problems that happen every night at about 8:30pm local time where the honor for the previous day is calculated. I did on 1 occasion get stuck in an completed Alterac Vally battle for over 40 minutes. I was unable to move or even quit World of Warcraft and ended up intentionally crashing the game to exit, I then had to wait in the queue for the next half an hour to get back in.

To conclude the new cross realm battlegrounds are an improvement over what we had before as some queues were well of 3 hours and are much shorter now. The winning percentages has both improved and gone down with the wider pool of players. The larger pool of players has also meant that you can meet new people but as they are new they are unknown in their abilities. My only hope is that the problems I have mentioned here get resolved sometime in the near future and look forward to the new battlegrounds that are going to be created with the expansion pack.

Glossary

Premades are a full raid of players who join the battleground queues as a raid, they tend to be very well geared (twinked) are from the same realm and guild and porbably are using Team Speak or Ventrilo to communicate with each other.

Twink is a miss used word, but in the game means a character who has as much of the best gear as possible with the best enchants on all of their gear. For example a level 19 Twink generally spend over 100g on items and enchants. They are generally created for the sole purpose to only do battlegrounds and a lot will never level beyond a point. All Items a Twink has will be at minimum all blue (rare) or purple (epic) and will be as close to their level as possible. A twink will generally be able to beat a player who 2 or more levels above them who is mostly wearing green items.

Turtling is the term given when in a battleground (mostly in Alterac Vally) where a Majority of Hord and Alliance Players spend a long time battling each other without gaining or losing much ground.

My music page

Friday, September 8th, 2006

I am a “closet DJ” and have produced a few tracks over the years. I thought that people might like to listen to them and so I have created a page off of my blog where you can download them. Most of the I created for use in my 3D computer animated short film Nectar Cup. All are original compositions made with a few different sequencing programs using a mix of premade samples and sequences that came with the programs and ones I created myself. I am eager to get some feedback from the music and will try to make some more in the future.

Internet problems

Wednesday, September 6th, 2006

If you are having trouble or have been having trouble connecting to My website that is because for some reason my Internet connection has kept losing sync every 5 to 30 minutes. There are not outage advisories listed on my ISP’s website for my exchanges DSLAM but there were so problems in some other ones in Adelaide so I am guessing that there may also be a problem with my exchanges one. At the time of writing this I am yet to lose sync for an hour so I am hoping that the problem is Fixed but if it continues I will keep you posted for updates on the situation.

Update

The problem seemed to have mostly fixed it self with only a few dropouts since. I am gessing that there may be a problem with our street wiring as it seemed to get worst around the time a shower of rain happened. I will continue to monitor the situation and hope that the problem does not arise again.

Texas Hold’em Xbox Live

Monday, September 4th, 2006

On Wednesday the 23 of August Texas Hold’em from TIK games was released for free to all Xbox Live Gold and Silver members for the first 48 hours. I was lucky enough to have downloaded it while it was free as I had not heard anything about It before it was released. After playing if for the a while I have found it to be an entertaining game to play in short bursts but can get tiering and frustrating if played for too long, especially if you are loosing. I have found that the AI tends to be a lot more conservative than real players who tend to play most hands even if they don’t have anything.

The graphics are simple but adequate for a poker game but does not show off the graphics potential of the Xbox 360. On the sound front there is also little to get excited about. The music is really annoying and could only stand it for 10 minutes before I had to turn it off. I would recommand that you either turn off the music and go silent or use you own custom sound track. The game has a fairly comprehensive statistics collecting system which some of it is used for player rankings.

The game consists of 2 parts single player ( offline versus AI) and Multilayer (versus real players on Xbox live ). In the single player you can play in 3 different modes standard, tournament and scenario. In standard you buy in for the game and play for as long as you like / afford over set blinds. In tournament you can play 1 of 4 different tournament levels. In scenario you can play 7 different scenarios. On the Multilayer side you can play in a competitive match (standard game) which is the same as in the single player mode but against real people and player match which is more flexible and you don’t have to risk you money.

Of all of the the Xbox Live Arcade games released Texas Hold’em is not the worst but is mot the best either. It has definite playability both now and in the future through Xbox Live especially when the Xbox Live Vision is released when you will be able to view you fellow players and try and read their expressions.

It is now available like all other Xbox Live Arcade games to all of the people who missed out on the free version for 800 Microsoft points.

Photo restorations page added

Friday, September 1st, 2006

I have just created a photo restoration page off of the portfolio page. The photo restoration page contains 2 before and after restoration photo’s. As you will notice in both of the before images the photos were extensively damaged and I have tried to fix the images as good as I could.
