World of warcraft

Wednesday, July 26th, 2006

As I have mentioned in a previous post I am a fairly serious gamer and one of the games I am playing a lot at the moment is Blizzards World of Warcraft. In this post I am going to review my experiences with the game.

I started playing on the 14th of December 2005 using a 14 day trial. I chose to play on the oceanic PVE (player versus environment) or “normal” server called Khaz’goroth. I chose to be a gnome warrior as I felt that gnomes were the most attractive characters and a warrior as I like to be in the action all of the time. Also warriors can use nearly all weapons and armor so that are the most versatile. My characters name is Bbg as my normal gamer tag etc is BrainBeat and I am a Gnome, it can also be any 2 ‘B’ adjectives gnome.

The game becomes very addictive as you aim to get your character to lvl 60 via the completion of quests and battling. I have been playing it for over six months and still want to keep playing it to get ranked higher in PVP and get better stuff. Blizzard is on about a monthly basis adding new content. There are currently 27 instances to do in either parties of upto 5 members or raids of up to 40 members. There are also 3 battle grounds in which you are able to battle the Hord players. The first one playable from level 10 is Warsong gulch which is played in a raid of 10 versus 10 in a capture the flag battle. The second one is available from level 20 is Athari basin played in a 15 man raid in a 5 point control. The last one is Alterac valley which is available from level 51, it is a 40 man raid. Alterac Vally is a very larg battle ground with multiple graveyards to capture, towers to destroy and bosses to kill while also hilling the Hord players. before the last few patches some Alterace valley battlegrounds would last for up to 18 hours or longer. The most frustrating thing about playing Battlegrounds as an alliance player is that the alliance only win about 10% of games. There are a few reasons for this.

  1. only about 10% of alliance seem to know how to play battlegrounds and their characters properly. One reason for this is that most people choose and alliance character to play as their first one.

  2. Most alliance healers do not heal people when all Hord healers do.

  3. The hord have Sharmen who are the best class in the game as the can heal, shape shift, use shields, where mail, and drop totems

  4. Most Hord who play in battlegrounds join in a pre-made group

  5. Alterac Valley is slightly hord bias in its layout as for example they are ably to jump into the top of the bunkers without climbing up the stairs.

The in game graphics are not bad and are certainly adequate but are starting to get a little dated compared to other games. That said if they did get any better in apearance most people would not be able to play it as there is alread heaps of lag from constant hard disk accessing. I regularly have my the frame rate drop below 10fps when going to a new area or in crowded places such as in front of the bank in Ironforge (the Dwarf and Gnome exiles home city). The character animation is where this game really shines with over fifty different emotes. For example each race and gender has their own dancing moves (the gnomes are the best dancers).

In terms of audio there are a few well produced pieces of music to set the mood but they get very repetitive after a few weeks of playing. The sound effects are of a high quality adding to the atmosphere of the game. The voice acting is good but very limited as there is only 1 or 2 voices per race and gender.

I would have to say that World of Warcraft is one of the best games i have ever played. But there are a few problems with the game especially when payed in Australia. All US servers are based in the US even the Oceanic ones which Khaz’goroth is one of them, this means that All australian players have at a minimum of 200 for their latentcy but i normally have one of 350+ this mean that if you are fighting someone in the US they have an advantage. Also the servers themselves get really laggy which some of the time is that the server computer and some that the server keeps on getting Denial of service attacks.

In future i will be posting a review of the new World of Warcraft website, WOW mods, WOW community website, and a review of the Burning Crusades expansion pack and any other interesting events, I may also write a post my journey to level 60.

Pushing Bad Data Google’s Latest Black Eye

Monday, July 24th, 2006

I am a subscriber to sitepro’s news letter and have just read this article called “Pushing Bad Data Google’s Latest Black Eye“. It is about how some spammers are abusing google’s bot and adsence to make money and increase google’s site listings by a few million or billion. This kind of practices are hurting the general public by infalting their adsence bill’s and cloging google searches with useless links. It is time that google fixes these problems or else they will start loosing business.

Electronic games

Wednesday, July 19th, 2006

Hi all

I thought I would say that in my spare time I am a Gamer.
I have many PC’s,an Xbox, an Xbox360,and a PSP all of which i play on a fairly regular basis. As I have a lot of systems i buy a lot of games. This has lead me to the idea to start reviewing games that i purchase and having a look at other related materials to the game. This will include official and unofficial gaming websites, game mods, Machinima (short movies made using a game). You may wonder why i will be including this in a multimedia blog but i think that all games are multimedia and they all have a lot of other uses of multimedia eg they have a website. In the next few days i will be posting a an initial review of World Of Warcraft.

Cars

Friday, July 14th, 2006

Hi all.

It is the winter shcool holidays here in Adelaide and with that comes the northern hemisperes summer blockbuster films. This has given me the idea to review all of the movies I see and their companion websites. The first movie i have seen is the Disney Pixar 3d computer animated film Cars. The story is about a red recing car called Lightning McQueen who is in a three way battle for the piston cup and his adventures on the way to the tiebreaking rece.I found that the story was probably the most adult of all of the pixar films. I think that al lot of younger children will find it less entertaining as there are fewer jokes through out the film. One think that realy anoys me about a majority of the cinema going public today leave as soon as the credits start rolling and miss half of the jokes. The credits are easaly the most funny part of the film and with all Pixar there is 1 final joke after the credits are finnished.

This is the best looking feature lenght 3d computer animated film i have seen. The sceneary is spectaculare with some of the most realistic trees seen in a Pixar film. The character models were also are up to Pixars impecable quality being very endeering to the audience in a cartoon styled form.

In closing on the movie review i would have to say that cars is very enjoyable film. I would recommend anyone see it but the story has more for and adult audience that pervious 3D computer animated films.

ADSL2+

It is certainly a lot faster than our old 1500kbps / 256kbps connection when we were connected to the Tel$tra DSLAM. Unfortunatly when we have tried to connect to the Agile DSLAM with our Netgear DG834G v2 router when the line is set to run at adsl2 speeds it fails to sync. I was however able to get it to run successfully at full ADLS1 speeds. I downloaded the most up to date firmware listed on the Netgear website (form 2.10.22 to 3.01.25 ) and that did not seem to help. I have contacted Internode’s it support line and they tried some thing on their end to try and get it working but to no avail, their suggestion was to get a new router. I have also read through forums on Whirlpool about my router and they suggested to try using some newer firmware patched that as the one I had installed most people seemed to be having the same problem. I installed 3.01.29 and tried to use ADLS2+ speeds and i managed to sync for 5 minutes at a time at 17Mbps, after about an 30mins of it re-syncing every 5mins i thought i would try changing the line profile to some of the other ones available but none of them worked any better. Also on whirlpool there were other people suggesting to try 3.01.31. I installed 3.01.31 and it seemed if anything to be as bad a 3.01.25 so it looks like I am going to be stuck with ADSL1 speeds until Netgear improves their firmware to sync better or get a new router.</p> <p style="margin-bottom: 0cm"> <p style="margin-bottom: 0cm">As a side note it would seem that the upload speed of ADSL1 is slightly faster than ADSL2 but slower than ADSL2+. So until I can get ADSL 2+ working it is probably better for us to use ADSL1 as the website will be have more bandwidth available.</p> <p><!--e439b63d68b4fa59c8f8acd1d77e2b50--> </p> <p><!--7bcca36555602ab5d23c1d252da9930f--> </p> </div> <p class="postmetadata">Posted in <a href="http://www.brainbeatproductions.com.au/blog/?cat=2" title="View all posts in Internet" rel="category tag">Internet</a> | <a href="http://www.brainbeatproductions.com.au/blog/?p=4#respond" title="Comment on ADSL2+">No Comments »</a></p> </div> <div class="navigation"> <div class="alignleft"></div> <div class="alignright"></div> </div> </div> <div id="sidebar"> <ul> <li> <form method="get" id="searchform" action="http://www.brainbeatproductions.com.au/blog/"> <div><input type="text" value="" name="s" id="s" /> <input type="submit" id="searchsubmit" value="Search" /> </div> </form> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://embed.technorati.com/embed/mmj2u29pmz.js"></script> </li> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://del.icio.us/feeds/js/networkbadge/brainbeat?name;icon"></script> <!-- Author information is disabled per default.
